Religious Trauma (RTS)

Support for Those Harmed by Religion, Spiritual Abuse, or High-Control Groups

Healing from Religious Trauma

Religious or spiritual beliefs can be a source of comfort, community, and purpose. But for many, experiences within religious settings have caused deep and lasting harm. If you've been hurt by the faith community you were raised in or one you joined later in life, you’re not alone—and healing is possible.

What Is Religious Trauma?

Religious trauma, sometimes referred to as Religious Trauma Syndrome (RTS), occurs when an individual experiences mental, emotional, or spiritual harm related to their religious beliefs, practices, or community. This trauma may result from:

  • Fear-based teachings (e.g., eternal damnation, divine punishment)

  • Authoritarian structures or spiritual abuse or manipulation

  • Shame around sexuality, identity, or questioning faith

  • Ostracism or rejection for leaving or expressing doubt

  • Control over thoughts, relationships, or life choices

These experiences can lead to symptoms similar to those of PTSD, such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, difficulty trusting others, or a sense of lost identity.

Common Signs of

Religious Trauma

  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or worthlessness tied to spiritual beliefs

  • Persistent fear or anxiety related to religious teachings

  • Loss of community or social support after leaving a faith group

  • Trouble setting boundaries or making decisions without guilt

  • Feeling disconnected from your body, emotions, or personal values

My Approach to Healing

As a trauma-informed therapist, I provide a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to explore your religious experiences and how they’ve shaped your life. Whether you’re deconstructing your faith, recovering from spiritual abuse, or seeking to rebuild a sense of self outside of religion, our work together will focus on:

  • Validating your experiences—without minimizing or pathologizing your pain

  • Processing grief, anger, and confusion in a safe environment

  • Rebuilding trust in yourself and your inner voice

  • Exploring new meaning or spiritual paths—if and when you choose

You don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t have to figure this out alone.
